Child identity theft is a growing crime that damages the pristine credit reports of children. Scammers use inactive Social Security numbers they find online – most of which are assigned to children under the age of 18 who have not started using them yet – and sell them to help people establish fake credit. Fraud targeting senior citizens continues to be a widespread concern reported by Better Business Bureau. In 2010, more than 2,700 seniors filed complaints with BBB, and so far in 2011 BBB has received more than 1,300 complaints.

Before getting money out at the ATM or filling up their gas tank, Better Business Bureau advises consumers to take a minute to inspect the machine before swiping a credit or debit card. Card skimming is becoming more common.

Local BBB Shred Day events last month resulted in participants shredding a total of 140,000 pounds (70 tons) of financial records, business forms and other confidential documents. To keep sensitive identification information away from the hands of identity thieves, a total of 2,544 cars visited shredding events held in Round Rock, Corpus Christi, Midland and San Antonio, Texas. In addition, over 5,000 pounds of electronics and 1,100 pounds of cardboard were collected and recycled by Goodwill at the events.

BBB has already heard from hundreds of consumers nationwide that may be victims of phishing attempts, due to the massive data breach of thousands of names and email addresses from Dallas-based Epsilon. The company, a third-party marketing service used by high-profile businesses to distribute emails to customers, confirmed the data breach last Friday and explained that the information stolen was limited to names and email addresses. The amount of data stolen is under investigation and has not yet been officially confirmed.
