BBB Offers Tips To Protect Yourself and Your Property Before and After the Storm

On March 26th, Central Texas was hit with a hailstorm that caused an estimated $160 million in damages. While the average hail storm lasts about six minutes, the National Weather Service estimates that hail causes roughly $1 billion in damages each year. Hail can severely damage the roof and siding of homes and businesses as well as shatter windshields, side view mirrors, headlights and leave noticeable damage to the body of a vehicle.

BBB Warns Grant Companies Exploit Confusion over Stimulus Bill to Rip Off Consumers

Better Business Bureau is warning the public to be extremely wary of companies that offer “free” advice on how to get government grants. Dozens of Web sites claim that, because of the recently passed stimulus package and other actions taken by President Obama, consumers can easily get government grants to pay bills or get out of debt. Contrary to such claims, the federal government does not award grants to help consumers pay general debt and complaints to BBB show that people who sought free advice were ultimately charged as much as $69.95 every month on their credit or debit card.

"Best Of" Award May Not Be Your Best Bet!

Everyone loves winning awards, but Dorothy Brooks of Southwest Movers Association thought there was something suspicious about this one. The email came from the "Selection Committee" of the U.S. Local Business Association and said Southwest Movers Association received the 2008 Best of Austin Award. The email went on to say that in recognition of their achievement, a 2008 Best of Austin Award plaque had been designed for display in their place of business.

Is My Bank Going to Fail? BBB Answers Questions and Puts Fears to Rest

According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the independent agency that insures bank deposits, IndyMac Bank was the third- largest financial institution to fail in U.S. history. In the wake of IndyMac's demise, two more banks in Nevada and California were recently taken over by the FDIC.
